Two University of Delaware doctoral students in energy economics and policy have won first prize in the 2016 U.S. Association for Energy Economics (USAEE) and International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) competition, sponsored by KAPSARC.
The duo developed a comprehensive solution for transitioning Saudi Arabia’s oil-dependent economy to renewable solar energy. Over three weeks, they prepared a 20-page report analyzing financial, cultural, and social factors. Their proposal, presented to a panel of judges at the 34th USAEE/IAEE North American Conference in Oklahoma, impressed the judges and earned UD its first win in the competition.
“This wasn’t just a case study—it was a real-world challenge, and we had to propose a practical, implementable solution,” said Al-Abbas. “We didn’t expect to win, but we approached it with a winning attitude,” added Nyangon.
Competing against top teams from institutions such as Carnegie Mellon and UC Davis, the UD students demonstrated exceptional expertise and strategic thinking, cementing the university’s growing reputation in energy policy and economics.
