Dr. Nyangon Highlights Cloud-Driven Grid Orchestration at INFORMS Conference
At the 2023 INFORMS Annual Meeting held in Phoenix, Arizona from October 14–18, Dr. Joe Nyangon participated in a high-level panel session titled “Resilience and Sustainability in Power Grid Planning and Operations.” The session brought together leading researchers and practitioners to explore how advanced analytics, optimization, and digital technologies are reshaping power system planning and operations in the face of climate, reliability, and decarbonization challenges.
Dr. Nyangon presented “Accelerating Grid Orchestration and Digital Transformation: Cloud Migration for a Carbon-Neutral Power Grid,” highlighting cloud migration as a critical enabler of modern grid orchestration and decarbonization. His presentation examined how cloud-based platforms can unlock scalable analytics, operational efficiency, and sustainability gains, while emphasizing the importance of renewable-powered cloud infrastructure, hardware efficiency, and circular value chains. The discussion underscored the utility industry’s growing imperative to modernize planning and operations to support a clean, resilient, and digitally enabled power grid.
The panel also featured complementary research on scenario-based optimization for grid resilience under extreme flooding events, integrated planning of hydrogen supply chains and power systems, and the equity and resilience impacts of community-scale distributed energy resources in the United States.
Together, the session reflected INFORMS 2023’s focus on actionable, analytics-driven solutions for building resilient, sustainable, and future-ready energy systems.
