Dr. Nyangon Presents Asset Health Implications of FERC Order 2222
On July 26, 2023, Dr. Joe Nyangon presented a featured webinar at the Utility Analytics Institute (UAI) examining the impacts of FERC Order 2222 on asset health across the U.S. power system. The session brought together utility professionals and analytics leaders to explore how the landmark federal order is reshaping grid operations, market participation, and infrastructure management.
FERC Order 2222 mandates regional transmission organizations (RTOs) and independent system operators (ISOs) to enable distributed energy resources (DERs) to participate directly in wholesale electricity markets. These resources—including solar PVs, electric vehicles, energy storage, auxiliary load control resources, and residential demand response technologies such as smart thermostats and water heaters—are redefining how assets are planned, operated, and maintained.
During the webinar, Dr. Nyangon outlined the evolving responsibilities of RTOs/ISOs, transmission utilities, and distribution utilities as they adapt to this new market paradigm. Key challenges discussed included market readiness, reliability certification, communication and data sharing frameworks, coordination of scheduled outages, and the clear delineation of roles between transmission and distribution market operators.
A central theme of the presentation was the critical role of advanced analytics in supporting DER aggregation, maintaining asset health, and enhancing market efficiency while ensuring transparency and accountability.
UAI, a utility-led membership organization, continues to support the industry’s digital transformation by advancing analytics capabilities and empowering professionals across all stages of their careers.
