New Publication Explores Expanding Customer Choice in New York’s Energy Transition

Dr. Nyangon and Prof. John Byrne published a new book chapter in Energy Systems and Environment (IntechOpen), edited by Prof. Pavel V. Tsvetkov. Titled “Diversifying Electricity Customer Choice: REVing Up the New York Energy Vision for Polycentric Innovation,” the chapter examines how energy utility business models are evolving to integrate distributed energy resources (DER) and offer customers greater control over their energy choices.

The authors highlight that while diversifying the energy mix presents opportunities for innovation, inadequate planning and slow regulatory adaptation can lead to significant social and economic costs. Using the Hamel business model framework, the chapter provides strategic analysis of New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative. It argues for polycentric, networked business-model innovations that leverage the strengths of existing institutions while promoting grid reliability, customer engagement, and decarbonization.

This research underscores the critical balance between technological adoption, regulatory frameworks, and customer-focused energy solutions. By emphasizing shared, flexible approaches to distribution management, the chapter provides actionable insights for utilities and policymakers navigating the rapidly changing energy sector.

Keywords: distributed energy resources, utility business models, customer choice, energy diversification, polycentric innovation, grid resilience.
